Handheld mineral analyzer employs XRD and XRF

LEICESTER, England – Efforts are under way to develop a handheld mineral analyzer for mining applications – the first of its kind. Allowing for rapid mineral identification and quantification in the field through a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF), the instrument will be created through a collaborative project between the University of Leicester’s Space Research Center (SRC) and Bruker Elemental. The addition of XRD capability is an improvement upon current XRF instruments, which sell thousands of units globally each year. The instrument is expected to...Read full article

    Glossary
    analyzer
An optical device, such as a Nicol prism, capable of producing plane-polarized light, and used for detecting the effect of the object on plane-polarized light produced by the polarizer.
    crystallography
The analysis of the atomic structures within crystals by means of x-ray diffraction.
    diffraction
Diffraction is a fundamental wave phenomenon that occurs when a wave encounters an obstacle or aperture, causing the wave to bend around the edges and spread out. This effect is most commonly observed with light waves, but it can also occur with other types of waves, such as sound waves, water waves, and even matter waves in quantum mechanics. Wave interaction: Diffraction occurs when a wave encounters an obstacle (e.g., an edge or slit) or a series of obstacles, such as a diffraction...
    efficiency
As applied to a device or machine, the ratio of total power input to the usable power output of the device.
    field
    1. In raster scan television, one of the two scans that are interlaced to make up a frame. 2. See field of view.
    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
