AMERSHAM, England, Sept. 9, 2008 -- Sensor, safety and technology group Halma announced Tuesday it has acquired Fiberguide Industries Inc. for an initial payment of $14.5 million in cash. Fiberguide, located in Stirling, N.J., makes complex optical fiber cables and assemblies, predominantly custom designed for OEMs in diverse end markets where high performance light delivery or measurement is required. Approximately half of their revenues (about $10.7 million in 2007) come from medical/biomedical, spectroscopic and analytical instrument applications. Fiberguide will join Halma's Photonics business within its Health and...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
