FEI and Max Planck Collaborate on Correlative Microscopy

FEI Co. of Hillsboro, Ore., a maker of high-resolution imaging and analysis systems, and Max Planck Institute (MPI) of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany, announced today their collaboration on a correlative microscopy solution that enables scientists to quickly and easily acquire high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of molecular entities found using optical microscopy techniques. Initial shipments are expected in the fourth quarter of 2008. The correlative microscopy solution, which was developed by MPI of Biochemistry and will be marketed and distributed worldwide...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    transmission electron microscope
A transmission electron microscope (TEM) is a powerful microscopy technique that uses a beam of electrons to create high-resolution images of extremely thin samples. In a TEM, electrons are transmitted through the sample rather than being bounced off its surface, as in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sample, typically prepared as an ultrathin section or a thin film, is placed in the path of the electron beam. As the electrons pass through the sample, they interact with its atoms,...
