Extreme UV Source Facility Opens for Use

University of Tokyo researchers have established a high-frequency laser source facility located at the university that enables investigation of time-dependent phenomena such as ultrafast chemical reactions and fast-acting biological processes. The facility specifically allows scientists to produce coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses and x-ray pulses — both highly precise light forms with finely controlled parameters crucial to many experiments. The coherent XUV light source is particularly adept at revealing clear details of biological and physical samples. Whereas existing...Read full article

    Glossary
    coherent light source
A light source that is capable of producing radiation with waves vibrating in phase. The laser is an example of a coherent light source.
    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
    vacuum
In optics, the term vacuum typically refers to a space devoid of matter, including air and other gases. However, in practical terms, achieving a perfect vacuum, where there is absolutely no matter present, is extremely difficult and often not necessary for optical experiments. In the context of optics, vacuum is commonly used to describe optical systems or components that are operated in a low-pressure environment, typically below atmospheric pressure. This is done to minimize the effects...
    vacuum chamber
A vacuum chamber is a sealed enclosure from which air and other gases are removed to create a low-pressure environment, typically close to or at a complete vacuum. These chambers are often constructed with materials that can withstand the pressure differentials and are equipped with mechanisms to evacuate air and maintain the desired level of vacuum. vacuum chamber suppliers → Vacuum chambers serve various purposes across different industries and scientific disciplines,...
