The European Commission has launched Fiber Optic Sensors -- European Network, an organization to promote technology transfer for optical fiber sensors. The network has signed on more than 50 partners, including Rolls Royce and Shell Oil Inc., along with universities and research centers throughout Europe. "In Europe there's a lot of activity going on, but it's fragmented," said Saeed Rehman of ProtoDel International Ltd., referring to research and development in this field. Located in Croydon, UK, ProtoDel will be instrumental in managing the organization, which will include an electronic network linking its partners for videoconferencing.
