New laser tech company emerges

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has branched out with the formation of Norlase, a new company specializing in a unique class of visible lasers. The diode lasers are based on technology from DTU. Norlase frequency-doubles the tapered diode laser with a nonlinear crystal, utilizing the stability of semiconductor lasers with levels of output power typically associated with optical pumping. Norlase laser technology provides designers of OEM equipment with stable, low-noise, compact, visible lasers in the 1- to 20-W CW range. It performs in a variety of applications,...Read full article

    optical pumping
The process whereby the number of atoms or atomic systems in a set of energy levels is changed by the absorption of light that falls on the material. This process raises the atoms to specific higher energy levels and may result in a population inversion between certain intermediate levels. The optical pumping of an optical medium within a laser cavity is one of the fundamental processes involved in the generation of a beam.
