DNA Could Drive Next-Gen Logic Chips

DURHAM, N.C., May 13, 2010 — A Duke University engineer is using the unique properties of DNA, the double-helix carrier of all life’s information, to produce simple next-generation logic circuits inexpensively in almost limitless quantities. Chris Dwyer, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, replaced the silicon chips that typically serve as the platform for electric circuits with customized snippets of DNA and other molecules that could literally create billions of tiny, identical waffle-looking structures.     A naturally occurring pigment in tissue that may selectively absorb certain wavelengths and can be used to aid in targeting the beam in laser surgery.
    nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale.
