ITHACA, N.Y., June 12 -- A new imaging technique that could lead to optical biopsies without removal of tissue is being reported by biophysical scientists at Cornell and Harvard universities. The advance in biomedical imaging enables noninvasive microscopy scans through the surface of intact organs or body systems. Demonstrations of the new technique are producing images of diseased tissue at the cellular level with unprecedented detail, according to a Cornell statement. Diagnoses of cancers and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, are two applications suggested by the...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesNobel Prize-Winning Techniques Help Resolve Imaging ChallengeUsing a technique that was recently awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in chemistry, researchers at Cornell University used expansion microscopy to study lipids, the water-repellent, dynamic components...BioPhotonics Jan/Feb 2023 IssueImaging System Speeds Diagnosis with Real-Time Biopsy AnalysisResults of a pilot study conducted at the University of Rochester showed that a system based on two-photon fluorescence microscopy (TPFM) enabled rapid diagnosis of nonmelanoma skin cancer through...Photonics.com 10/13/2022Biophotonics Congress 2023 Centers on Cell Labeling in Diagnostics and Superresolution MicroscopyResearchers and systems designers with expertise in techniques such as signal and image processing for biomedical optics and optical manipulation of the nervous system will converge April 24-27 at...BioPhotonics Mar/Apr 2023 IssueSLAC’s Upgraded XFEL Registers 'First Light'SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory reported that the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) has produced its first x-rays following a $1.1 billion upgrade.
