Compact Device Combines Light Sensing and Modulation

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 12, 2024 — A device developed by researchers at CEA-Leti combines the ability to sense light and modulate it accordingly by pairing a liquid crystal cell and a CMOS image sensor into a single device. According to the researchers, this is the first time a single device has had these capabilities simultaneously. The compact system provides intrinsic optical alignment and compactness and is easy to scale-up, facilitating the use of digital optical phase conjugation (DOPC) techniques in applications such as microscopy and medical imaging. In a paper presented at the 2024 IEEE International...Read full article

    Glossary
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
    liquid crystal
Liquid crystals are a state of matter that exhibits properties intermediate between those of conventional liquids and solid crystals. In a liquid crystal, the molecules are ordered like those in a crystal, but they can still flow like a liquid. This unique combination of structural order and fluidity gives liquid crystals their distinctive characteristics and makes them valuable in various technological applications, particularly in display technology. Key features and characteristics of...
    pixel
A pixel, short for "picture element," is the smallest controllable element of a digital image or display. It is a fundamental unit that represents a single point in a raster image, which is a grid of pixels arranged in rows and columns. Each pixel contains information about the color and brightness of a specific point in the image. Some points about pixels include: Color and intensity: In a colored image, each pixel typically consists of three color channels: red, green, and blue (RGB). The...
    modulation
In general, changes in one oscillation signal caused by another, such as amplitude or frequency modulation in radio which can be done mechanically or intrinsically with another signal. In optics the term generally is used as a synonym for contrast, particularly when applied to a series of parallel lines and spaces imaged by a lens, and is quantified by the equation: Modulation = (Imax – Imin)/ (Imax + Imin) where Imax and Imin are the maximum and minimum intensity levels of the image.
