The Society for Neuroscience will hold its 2024 annual meeting Oct. 5-9 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. Society members and attending nonmembers will gather to discover new ideas, share the latest in research, and attend on-site presentations and industry events. The convention’s content will be fully available in person, with on-demand recordings of some parts of the event available for 30 days after the meeting A Presidential Special Lecture from Rui M. Costa of the Allen Institute in Seattle will discuss the institute’s efforts in mapping cell types and circuits in mammalian brains using techniques such as advanced light microscopy, single-cell transcriptomics, and morphological and physiological analyses. His lecture, “Mapping the Brain: From Cells and Circuits to Function,” will delve into the importance of the efforts of brain mapping for investigating the dynamics of neuronal activity across brain regions and the open sharing of such knowledge to fellow neuroscientists. Additionally, Presidential Special Lectures will be delivered by Laurie A. Paul of Yale University, Nancy Y. Ip of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Markita D. Landry of University of California, Berkley. These lectures are titled “What Does a Large Language Model Know?,” “Unveiling the Nexus of Innate Immunity and Alzheimer’s Disease: Insights Into Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Prospects,” and “Imaging Brain Chemistry in Brain Health and Disease: From Neurotransmitters to Neuropeptides,” respectively. Other lectures will cover topics ranging from sex-specific neural architecture to whether sleep helps in taming the dangers of an aerobic metabolism. In a featured lecture, Harvard Medical School’s Gabriel Lázaro-Muñoz will give a talk entitled “Mixing Brains and Computers.” Lázaro-Muñoz’s lecture will cover current research and testing into brain-computer interfaces for applications in managing treatment-resistant movement, seizures, and psychiatric disorders as well as future possibilities in interacting with smartphones, computers, and other devices. A multitude of symposia and minisymposia will be included in this year’s program, with a focus on themes such as the nervous system, research into higher-level vision, brain imaging, and behavioral responses to temperature change. A “Meet the Experts” series, with live, one-hour webinars after the conclusion of Neuroscience 2024 will include a “Meet the Clinician Expert” series. Featured panel sessions will also take place including clinical roundtables, dual perspectives, and a story telling session. Guests will also have the opportunity to attend numerous professional development workshops, events geared toward networking, and public outreach sessions hosted by neuroscientists. A “Product Theater” will include 30-minute presentations or product demonstrations from exhibitors.
