Cell Phones Facilitate Spectrometry

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Oct. 19, 2010 — University of Illinois chemistry professor Alexander Scheeline wants to see high school students using their cell phones in class. Not for texting or surfing the Web, but as an analytical chemistry instrument: Using a few basic, inexpensive supplies and a digital camera, he built a spectrometer. A few basic, inexpensive components and a cell phone are all that high school students need to build a spectrometer. (Images: L. Brian Stauffer, University of Illinois) “If we want to measure the amount of protein in meat, or water in grain, or iron in blood, it’s done by...Read full article

    digital camera
A digital camera is a device that captures and records still images or video in digital format. Unlike traditional film cameras, which use photographic film to capture and store images, digital cameras use electronic sensors to convert light into digital data that can be stored, displayed, and manipulated electronically. digital camera suppliers → Key components of a digital camera include: Image sensor: The image sensor is the electronic component that captures incoming...
    photodetector
A photodetector, also known as a photosensor or photodiode, is a device that detects and converts light into an electrical signal. Photodetectors are widely used in various applications, ranging from simple light sensing to more complex tasks such as imaging and communication. Key features and principles of photodetectors include: Light sensing: The primary function of a photodetector is to sense or detect light. When photons (particles of light) strike the active area of the photodetector,...
    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
    spectrophotometry
Study of the reflection or transmission properties of specimens as a function of wavelength.
    spectrum
    See optical spectrum; visible spectrum.
