CCD and CMOS image sensor technologies were invented in the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the time, CMOS performance was limited by available lithography technology, allowing CCDs to dominate for the next 25 years. Manufacturing and design of CCD and CMOS image sensors have changed significantly since they were invented.
