Blue Light Influences Cognition Even After Exposure Ends

Scientists have shown that a single exposure to blue wavelength light for a period of approximately one-half hour leads to measurable changes in brain activity in the prefrontal cortex when people engage in a cognitive task, even after light exposure is terminated. Researchers at the University of Arizona studied 35 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 32. The participants were randomized to receive a 30-minute exposure to either blue (active) or amber (placebo) light, followed immediately by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while undertaking a working memory task. ...Read full article

    photon
A quantum of electromagnetic energy of a single mode; i.e., a single wavelength, direction and polarization. As a unit of energy, each photon equals hn, h being Planck's constant and n, the frequency of the propagating electromagnetic wave. The momentum of the photon in the direction of propagation is hn/c, c being the speed of light.
