Bird Flu Biosensor is Better

ATLANTA, Sept. 28, 2007 -- A new, portable biosensor based on interferometry is more sensitive and days faster than commercially available tests for avian influenza ("bird flu"), and can also identify different strains simultaneously. “We can do real-time monitoring of avian influenza infections on the farm, in live-bird markets or in poultry processing facilities,” said Jie Xu, a research scientist in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s (GTRI) Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory. Jie Xu, a research scientist in the Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory, tests a sample using the...Read full article

    Glossary
    antigen
An antigen is any substance that is capable of triggering an immune response in an organism. Antigens are typically proteins or large polysaccharides, although other types of molecules can also act as antigens. These substances are recognized by the immune system as foreign or non-self, which initiates an immune response aimed at neutralizing or eliminating them from the body. When an antigen enters the body, specialized cells of the immune system, such as B cells and T cells, recognize...
    fringe
An interference band such as Newton's ring.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    optical waveguide
Any structure having the ability to guide the flow of radiant energy along a path parallel to its axis and to contain the energy within or adjacent to its surface.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
    waveguide
A waveguide is a physical structure or device that is designed to confine and guide electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves, microwaves, or light waves. It is commonly used in communication systems, radar systems, and other applications where the controlled transmission of electromagnetic waves is crucial. The basic function of a waveguide is to provide a path for the propagation of electromagnetic waves while minimizing the loss of energy. Waveguides come in various shapes and sizes, and...
