Avo Photonics Marks 5 Years

Avo Photonics announced it is celebrating its fifth year of continuous operation. The Horsham, Pa.-based custom optoelectronic design and contract manufacturing house was founded in November 2003 by Dr. Joseph Dallas and David Winick to serve the military, aerospace, medical and telecommunications markets. To date, Avo said it has produced nearly 1 million optical assemblies for its more than 20 customers. In addition to its headquarters, Avo has a division in Toronto and has also begun interactions with a high-volume sister investor company in Juarez, Mexico. "We are often kidded for stating...Read full article

    Glossary
    optoelectronic
Pertaining to a device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
    optomechanical
Optomechanical refers to the integration of optical and mechanical systems or components. In optomechanical systems, optics (related to the manipulation of light) and mechanics (related to the movement and manipulation of physical objects) are combined to achieve specific functionalities or goals. Optomechanical systems are often used in fields such as precision engineering, telecommunications, photonics, and experimental physics. They can involve the design and construction of devices like...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
