Algorithms Enhance Imaging Techniques for Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Tomosynthesis, a technique that can produce pseudo 3-D reconstructions, could top traditional mammography in breast cancer screening and detection, a recent study suggests. Researchers at Emory University have found that digital tomosynthesis imaging offers more sensitivity and specificity than mammography in breast cancer screening. “Currently, mammography is the technique used most often… but since it gives only 2-D projection information of a 3-D anatomical structure, inaccuracies in screening often occur,” said James G. Nagy, a researcher and professor of...Read full article

    algorithm
A precisely defined series of steps that describes how a computer performs a task.
    central processing unit
The computer module whose circuitry interprets instructions and guides the actions of the peripherals. Also known as the mainframe.
    tomosynthesis
A variation of tomography in which several photographs of a patient are taken at different angles, and back-projection of the resulting radiographs produces light distribution in a chosen three-dimensional volume of space that replicates the same volume in the patient.
