HEIDELBERG, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2017 — Purdue University Ph.D. candidate Clint Alfaro has received the 2016 Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry Best Paper Award from Springer International Publishing AG, publisher of the Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry (ABC). In a paper published in ABC, first author Alfaro and his colleagues describe molecular techniques that have great potential to augment the surgeon's toolbox, such as mass spectrometry. The techniques could guide surgical decision-making during tumor resection, thus benefiting patient outcomes. "This research is a key contribution to the literature as it...Read full article

    mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular composition and structure of compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). It involves ionizing chemical substances to generate ions, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio using electric and magnetic fields, and detecting and quantifying these ions to create a mass spectrum. Ionization: Samples are ionized using techniques such as electron impact ionization, electrospray ionization...
