ATLANTA, June 9 -- Alcatel has set two world records for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission capacity over ultra long-haul terabit networks, the company said. The first demonstration, which took place at this year's SUPERCOMM trade show, involved the use of Raman amplification to achieve a 3000-km transmission of 80 DWDM channels at 10 Gb/s each. The second demonstration showed a 250-km unrepeatered transmission span with 32 channels at 40 Gb/s each.The 3000-km transmission enables operators to carry out ultra long-haul transmission on existing fiber infrastructures without having to build additional intermediate terminal stations. Alcatel's 1640 Optinex DWDM transport system was used for the 3000-km transmission at a 10 Gb/s per channel. The development of Alcatel's 250-km unrepeatered transmission technology is important for the development of terrestrial and coastal networks. The demonstration involved the use of 40 Gb/s channels for 1.28 Tb/s capacities on standard silica core fibers to create the longest single-span unrepeatered transmission distance (250 km) ever achieved.
