Achromatic X-Ray Lens Opens Pathways in Microscopy, Access to Light Sources

VILLIGEN, Switzerland, May 4, 2022 — Scientists at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) developed an achromatic lens for x-rays that allows x-ray beams to be accurately focused on a single point even if they have different wavelengths. The lens will make it easier to study nanostructures with x-ray light, supporting R&D in materials science, microchips, and batteries. Achromatic lenses ensure that different wavelengths can have a common focal point. They are essential for producing sharp photography and microscopy images. To date, achromatic lenses have been unavailable for x-rays. This has made x-ray microscopy possible only...Read full article

    Glossary
    achromat
An achromat, in the context of optics, refers to a type of lens or lens system designed to reduce chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration is an optical phenomenon where different colors of light are focused at different distances from a lens, causing blurred or color fringed images. An achromat typically consists of two or more lens elements made from different types of optical glass with different dispersions. The goal is to bring two different wavelengths of light (usually red and blue)...
    achromatic
Achromatic refers to something that is without color or lacking in chromatic coloration. In optics and color theory, it specifically refers to colors or images that are rendered in shades of black, white, and gray, without any discernible hue. Achromatic colors are often neutral and devoid of any spectral color, such as pure white, pure black, and various shades of gray in between.
