Raytheon Delivers Light Thermal Weapon Sights

MCKINNEY, Texas, Oct. 2 -- Raytheon Co. recently delivered 150 light thermal weapon sight (TWS) systems to the US Army, the first installment of 2500 systems that are being produced under the Army's 1998 Thermal Omnibus I contract. The remaining 2350 units will be delivered by December.

The TWS product line, jointly developed by the Army and Raytheon, is based on forward-looking infrared (FLIR) technology. The systems enable war fighters to engage targets at any time of day and regardless of weather conditions or other factors that could obscure their view of a battlefield. The advanced thermal imaging sensors are deployed on light, medium and heavy weapons use by the Army, Air Force, Marines and Special Operations.

Raytheon has produced more than 10,000 medium and heavy TWS systems.

forward-looking infrared
A night-vision device that uses one or more infrared transducers to scan a scene in the 3- to 5-µm or 8- to 12-µm spectral region, convert the infrared radiation to electronic data and present the resulting image on a televisionlike display. The term originally referred to airborne systems but now is used for any real-time thermal imaging system.
