ROANOKE, Va., Sept. 10 -- Optical Cable Corp. will lay off 27 employees, or 12 percent of its work force, in a move to streamline operations. The maker of fiber optic cable said this was the first work force reduction in its history. Most of the employees being laid off were hired in the first and second quarters of fiscal 2001 and some were still in various stages of training.
