Oct. 9 is the deadline for submissions to the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Awards, which will debut at the 2008 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), Feb. 24-28 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif. The award competition from Corning Inc., made possible through an endowment from the OSA Foundation, will recognize future leaders in optical communications. Papers will be ranked for innovation, research excellence and author presentation skills. The grand-prize winner will receive $1500; honorable mentions will be awarded $1000 each. Submissions will be reviewed and scored by the OFC/NFOEC technical program committee according to standard review criteria. Undergraduate or graduate students devoting at least 50 percent of their time to studies in an academic environment who are the primary authors of a paper and who will present it at OFC/NFOEC are eligible.
