The Department of Commerce’s (DoC) National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seeks grant proposals from higher-education institutions and nonprofit organizations for the construction of science research buildings. The agency announced it will award approximately $29 million in federal funding for the one-time, competitive grant program. Awards are expected to range from approximately $10 million to $15 million. The program was created under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-161) to  fund construction of new buildings or expand existing ones for the sciences as they relate to DoC and its agencies, which include NIST, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Deadline for applications is July 21, 3 p.m.; selections will be made by the end of September. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
