Safety Vision, a Houston mobile video company, announced today an agreement with Flir Systems Inc., a Boston-based maker of thermal imaging cameras, to promote Flir's PathFindIR infrared camera designed to make night driving safer. Safety Vision said the strategy will allow both companies to expand into the fire/rescue/emergency medical sector and the commercial trucking and mining industries. Rex Colorado, vice president of sales and new product development at Safety Vision, said, “This agreement enables us to be the first mobile video company to offer a truly integrated solution of this caliber to our customers. Initially, infrared systems were cost prohibitive, but changes in technology and volume production have brought costs down." The PathFindIR enables first responders and other drivers to see in total darkness, smoke, dust, rain, snow and light fog, Flir said. "Vehicle headlight systems provide between 250 to 450 feet of moderate illumination, giving most drivers traveling at 60 miles an hour less than 4 seconds to react, it said. "By contrast, the Flir system increases the line of sight five times farther than headlight beams; so under the same conditions, the driver has more than 15 seconds to react to roadway and onsite hazards."
