M Squared Awarded DUV Laser Grant

M Squared Lasers Ltd. of Glasgow, Scotland, has won a £50,000 (about $95,000) SMART award from the Scottish government to develop next-generation deep ultraviolet (DUV) diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSS). This is M Squared's second SMART award in its first year of operation. Graeme Malcolm, CEO, said M Squared will use its ICE-BLOC instrumentation modules and InvarianT optomechanical mounting in developing the systems, which have applications in optical metrology, direct-write photolithography for the semiconductor industry, optical disk mastering, UV spectroscopy and remote sensing. He said they will also be used in the development of extreme DUV DPSS sources.

Glossary
deep ultraviolet
Deep ultraviolet (DUV or deep-UV) refers to a specific range of ultraviolet light with shorter wavelengths than those in the UV-A and UV-B regions. The exact wavelength range considered as DUV can vary, but it often includes wavelengths from around 100 to 300 nanometers. DUV light is shorter in wavelength and higher in energy than visible light. DUV light covers the spectrum from approximately 100 to 300 nanometers. This range is subdivided into different sub-bands, such as UV-C (100 to...
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
