Lumera to Develop Polymer Devices for DARPA

Photonic communications company Lumera Corp. of Bothell, Wash. announced that it has been awarded a DARPA Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to design and fabricate electro-optic polymer devices. The initial contract amount is $98,933, but the company could receive a subsequent contract of approximately $750,000 if certain milestones are met, Lumera said. "The final goal and end product of the contract will be to economically produce high bandwidth, small chip, stable, low voltage, low loss, ultralinear high-EO (electro-optic) -coefficient polymer directional coupler modulators," said Raluca Dinu, PhD, vice president, Electro-Optic unit.

Glossary
bandwidth
The range of frequencies over which a particular instrument is designed to function within specified limits. See also fiber bandwidth.
chip
1. A localized fracture at the end of a cleaved optical fiber or on a glass surface. 2. An integrated circuit.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
polymer
Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. These monomers are chemically bonded together to form long chains or networks, creating a macromolecular structure. The process of linking monomers together is known as polymerization. Polymers can be classified into several categories based on their structure, properties, and mode of synthesis. Some common types of polymers include: Synthetic polymers: These are human-made polymers produced through...
