MADRID, June 6 -- Lucent Technologies has begun work on the first phase of an agreement to supply and build a high-capacity national optical network for Airtel Mo´vil. The agreement -- potentially worth 20 million Euros -- is for Lucent to provide Airtel with a high-speed, converged voice and data network so Airtel can provide a full range of offerings -- including wireless and wireline services and Internet access -- to its customers. The agreement calls for Lucent to positions its WaveStar OLS 400G, which is an 80-channel dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system, into Airtel's network. This will allow Airtel's network to transmit information at up to 400 Gb/s. Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G will enable Airtel to better provide its five million wireless customers with prompt service.
