BEIJING, Feb. 27 -- Lucent Technologies announced it has signed a $20-million contract with Shanghai Telecom to provide optical products that will triple the company's local network transmission capacity. The products also will allow Shanghai Telecom to offer new bandwidth-intensive data services to its customers. Shanghai Telecom is one of the subsidiaries of China Telecom, China's biggest telecommunications service provider. "We're very happy to have Lucent as our partner in expanding Shanghai's local network," said Shao Xinke, assistant chief engineer of Shanghai Telecom, who is in charge of the project. "We are impressed with Lucent's industry-leading optical networking equipment which will greatly boost the capacity of our local networks." Under the terms of the contract, Shanghai Telecom will deploy eight sets of the Lucent WaveStar BandWidth Manager, WaveStar DACS and WaveStar ADM 16/1 to expand the city's backbone network. This is the first time the Lucent WaveStar BandWidth Manager will be deployed in China. Delivery of the equipment began in December 2000.
