Light Management to Supply UV Scanner to Baylor College of Medicine

NORCROSS, Ga., Feb. 25 -- Light Management Group Inc., developer of optical and light technologies employing sound waves, has signed an agreement to supply The Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas) with an ultraviolet (UV) scanner and an acousto-optical deflector for testing and evaluation involving the UV photolysis of neurotransmitters.

Peter Saggau, a professor specializing in advanced optical techniques for neuroscience research, will oversee the evaluation of the UV scanner for a possible purchase by the college. Saggau's work focuses on the development of fast laser scanning approaches, including UV photolysis, confocal microscopy and two-photon microscopy.

"The UV scanner could play an integral role in enabling scientists to program complex spatio-temporal patterns of input to nerve cells in the laboratory; this would allow us to study more directly the basic processes of dendritic integration and learning and memory than has been possible to date," said Saggau. "By further considering how these processes are altered in pathological cells, we may gain valuable insights into the disease mechanisms of epilepsy and Alzheimer's, for instance."
