FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 9 -- Lambda Physik, in conjunction with Microlas Lasersystems GmbH, has been given a contract worth $11-million by Japan Steel Works (JSW). According to Lambda, a subsidiary of Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., the deal calls for the production of a variety of lasers and line-beam optics that will be used by JSW in the mass production of liquid-crystal display panels.Included in the deal are Lambda's new stable energy excimer lasers, which have been specially modified to work with JSW's TFT-annealing systems. JSW will use its annealing systems in combination with the radiation produced from Lambda's excimer lasers to create the technology needed to mass-produce polysilicon-TFT-liquid-crystal display panels. Such panels can be found in laptop computers, car navigation displays, televisions, video recorders and cameras.
