ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland and Labrador, March 17, 2025 — Marine technology company Kraken Robotics will acquire 3D at Depth, Inc., a U.S.-based subsea technology and services company specializing in high resolution lidar imaging and measurements for underwater applications. The deal carries a cash value of $17 million.

According to Kraken Robotics president and CEO Greg Reid, the acquisition builds on Kraken's expertise in subsea optical systems and expands offerings in that area by adding solutions that feature differentiate capabilities. Kraken provides subsea sensors, batteries, and robotic systems designed for marine and underwater use cases.

The combined company’s platforms will have a strong R&D feedback loop as technologies are deployed, tested, and iterated in Kraken’s services business, Kraken said. It plans to make the acquisition through a subsidiary, and said that it has already signed a definitive agreement and plan of merger for the indirect acquisition.

3D at Depth’s headquarters and production facility are based in Longmont, Colo. with offshore service operations based out of Houston. The company operates two satellite offices in the U.K.

lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
