Kollmorgen Electro-Optical Corp. has been awarded a $9.3 million US Navy contract for work supporting photonics mast imaging systems on submarines. Under the indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Div. in Newport, Va., Kollmorgen will install and then provide repair and maintenance services for the AN/BVS-1 and the Photonics Mast Variant (PMV) photonics imaging systems. The non-hull-penetrating AN/BVS-1 photonics mast is designed to replace a traditional optical periscope to provide US submarines with a greater ability to perform surveillance and gather intelligence. The mast contains cameras, a multispectral suite of stablized electro-optical sensors, an eye-safe laser rangefinder, advanced displays and thermal imaging sensors, among other features. Seventy percent of the work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and 30 percent at Kollmorgen's Northampton headquarters. The contract is expected to be completed by December 2013.
