JENA, Germany, Oct. 21, 2013 — Jenoptik’s Lasers & Material Processing Div. has sold its 200th laser perforating system, the company announced last week. The system will be used to create predetermined breaking points for automotive airbags.

Jenoptik has sold its 200th laser system for airbag production. The Jenoptik-Votan was sold to Yanfeng Visteon Automotive Trim Systems, China’s fourth-largest automotive supplier. Courtesy of Jenoptik.

Jenoptik finalized the sale of the Jenoptik-Votan system at the K plastics fair in Duesseldorf, Germany, last week to China’s fourth-largest automotive supplier, Yanfeng Visteon Automotive Trim Systems Co. Ltd. (YFV).

YFV specializes in making car dashboards and uses Jenoptik lasers to create “tear lines” on passenger and knee airbag flaps. The laser creates a perforation long the back of the material, which can be plastic, fabric or leather, so that the airbag breaks along the line and opens during a collision. A special sensor prevents the laser from completely severing the material.

YFV has bought several laser systems from the division in the past, Jenoptik said.
