Hexagon Acquires 3D System's Geomagic Software Business

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 30, 2024 — Digital reality solutions company Hexagon AB has acquired 3D Systems’ Geomagic suite of interoperable software packages, which are used to create high quality 3D models from multiple sources, including laser scanning. Hexagon will pay a purchase price of $123 million for the Geomagic software business, on a cash and debt-free basis.

The Geomagic suite, which includes products such as Design X, Control X, Freeform, and Wrap, is capable of automating the processing of 3D scan data to build digital models from physical objects, which can then be used to generate history-based parametric computer-aided design (CAD) models for use in product manufacturing. The Geomagic software tools can also be used to undertake initial free-form design, modify existing CAD models, and accurately measure and inspect parts for quality control purposes when finished.

The acquired capabilities will strengthen the existing software portfolio of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence and combine with its leadership in portable metrology sensors to deliver a suite of solutions across the full range of manufacturing applications.

The companies expect to be fully completed by the second quarter of 2025.

metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
laser scanning
Laser scanning is a technology used to create precise digital representations of physical objects or environments by capturing their surface geometry and appearance. It involves directing a laser beam over the object or scene and measuring the distance to points on the surface by analyzing the time it takes for the laser pulses to return to the scanner. The process typically involves the following steps: Laser emission: A laser scanner emits a laser beam directed towards the object or...
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
