Capella Intelligent Subsystems of San Jose, Calif., a provider of wavelength management subsystems for use in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) applications, today announced the appointment of George Berberis as chief operating officer (COO). Berberis will be responsible for leading the engineering, operations and manufacturing functions and will oversee Capella’s research and development activities. Most recently, he was the executive operations advisor at Avanex, where he was instrumental in the sale of the company's French foundry, Avanex France SA, to 3S Photonics in April 2007. Subsequently, he was retained by 3S Photonics as executive advisor to the CEO. Prior to joining Avanex, Berberis was vice president of manufacturing operations at JDSU where he managed the global operations for the communications division, including managing high-volume manufacturing of optical components and modules. He played a key role in transitioning JDSU's in-house manufacturing into a contract manufacturing model. Berberis began his career as an engineering manager with Tandon/Western Digital and later worked for 11 years at HMT Technology, where he led manufacturing and engineering activities.
