WILSONVILLE, Ore., April 7, 2009 – Flir Systems Inc., a manufacturer of thermal imaging and stabilized camera systems, announced that it has received a $4.1 million order from Northrop Grumman for its Brite Star II multisensor target designation system.

The units will be installed on Northrop Grumman’s MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical take-off and landing Tactical unmanned aerial vehicle. The Fire Scout provides intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to tactical users without relying on manned aircraft or space-based systems.

Work will be performed at Flir’s facilities in Wilsonville; deliveries are expected to begin this year and conclude in 2010.

“This order highlights Flir’s position as a leading supplier of thermal imaging and target designation systems,” said Earl R. Lewis, president and CEO of Flir Systems. “We are pleased to partner with Northrop Grumman on Fire Scout to provide situational awareness and real-time intelligence for the commander’s missions.”

photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
thermal imaging
Thermal imaging is a technology that detects infrared radiation (heat) emitted by objects and converts it into an image, known as a thermogram, which displays temperature variations in different colors. Unlike visible light imaging, thermal imaging does not require any ambient light and can be used in complete darkness or through obstructions such as smoke, fog, and certain materials. Thermal cameras use sensors to detect infrared radiation and generate images based on the temperature...
