WILSONVILLE, Ore., Oct. 4, 2013 — Thermal imaging and detection systems maker Flir Systems Inc. has been awarded a $49.9 million Navy contract to supply maritime electro-optical/IR imaging systems to the Navy and Coast Guard.

The contract, awarded by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Div., will support the Navy and Coast Guard’s Patrol Boat Electro-Optics System (PB-EOS) program. Flir will supply a variant of its recently introduced SeaFLIR 280-HD maritime electro-optical/IR imaging system for enhanced navigation, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

“Winning this contract proves the benefits of our commercially developed, military-qualified model to our customers,” said Flir president and CEO Andy Teich, adding that “this will further strengthen our already leading presence in the maritime EO/IR market.”

Work under the contract is expected to be performed at Flir’s Billerica, Mass., facility and completed by September 2018.

Glossary
electro-optics
1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material; 2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light. Compare with optoelectronics.
thermal imaging
Thermal imaging is a technology that detects infrared radiation (heat) emitted by objects and converts it into an image, known as a thermogram, which displays temperature variations in different colors. Unlike visible light imaging, thermal imaging does not require any ambient light and can be used in complete darkness or through obstructions such as smoke, fog, and certain materials. Thermal cameras use sensors to detect infrared radiation and generate images based on the temperature...
