Fab Owners' Group Adds 3 Members

The Fab Owners Association (FOA), a Cupertino, Calif.-based association of semiconductor and MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) manufacturing executives and suppliers, has added device-maker members: austriamicrosystems AG, a maker of analog integrated circuits for communications, industrial, medical and automotive applications; Avago Technologies, which provides analog, mixed-signal and optoelectronic components and subsystems to OEMs; and X-Fab, a foundry group for mixed-signal semiconductor applications. National Grid, a strategic economic-development program sponsor for upstate New York, joined as an associate member. FOA has more than 60 members from fabrication facilities worldwide. Other device-maker members are AMI Semiconductor, Cypress Semiconductor, Delphi Microelectronics Center, Fairchild Semiconductor, Freescale Semiconductor, International Rectifier, Intersil, Jazz Semiconductor, MagnaChip Semiconductor, Micrel Semiconductor, Microchip Technology, NXP, ON Semiconductor, Skyworks Solutions and Spansion.

Glossary
microelectromechanical systems
Refers to micron-size complex machines that have physical dimensions suitable for the fabrication of optical switches for use in state-of-the-art communications networks.
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
