Displaytech Unveils Industry's First Color Microdisplay Made for Camcorders

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 7 -- Displaytech Inc., providers of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, and its Japanese manufacturing partner Miyota Co. Ltd., have announced plans to develop the industry's first color microdisplay specifically designed for use as a viewfinder in camcorders. This new PLP display is based on Displaytech's LightView NTSC video display module, a black and white display featured in the GR-DVL310U JVC camcorder.
The display's resolution of 400 x 225 pixels translates to high-quality, sharp image representation, the company said. A form factor of 0.24 inches diagonally means the displays are light and can be used for innovative product designs. Additionally, this microdisplay uses much less power than conventional display alternatives, greatly extending the battery life of mobile electronic devices.
The color PLP will be manufactured exclusively at Miyota and is part of a private-label product line available only through that company. Displaytech and Miyota project the PLP display will be available for delivery in the first half of 2002.
