SALEM, N.H., July 13 -- Diversified Optical Products Inc. (Diop), a manufacturer of thermal imaging systems and optical components, has received a five-year, $9 million contract from BAE Systems, based in Lexington, Mass., to design and fabricate the infrared (IR) objective lens assemblies for its Thermal Weapons Sight II. The base number of units is 11,700, which could rise to 28,000 units, making the contract value more than $24 million over five years.

Infrared objective lenses are major subassemblies in the Thermal Weapons Sight II program for BAE Information and Electronic Warfare Systems.

BAE Systems makes military aircraft, surface ships, submarines, radar, avionics, communications, electronics and guided weapon systems.

Glossary
thermal imaging
Thermal imaging is a technology that detects infrared radiation (heat) emitted by objects and converts it into an image, known as a thermogram, which displays temperature variations in different colors. Unlike visible light imaging, thermal imaging does not require any ambient light and can be used in complete darkness or through obstructions such as smoke, fog, and certain materials. Thermal cameras use sensors to detect infrared radiation and generate images based on the temperature...
