Defense CIO to Speak at OFC 2004

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 -- John Stenbit, the Defense Department's chief information officer and assistant secretary for command, control, communications and intelligence, will discuss how the US is using dense wavelength division multiplexing to transform operations at the Pentagon and where defense technology is headed, as a plenary speaker at the 2004 annual Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC), to be held Feb. 22-27 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles.

Other plenary speakers will be Yong-Kyung Lee, CEO of Korea Telecom, and William Cadogan, a general partner with St. Paul Venture Capital. Lee will speak about Asia's booming telecommunications market, including the widespread availability of broadband access in Korea and the evolution of fiber leading to fiber-to-the-home. Cadogan will discuss financial challenges facing carriers around the world. The plenary session, which will take place Feb. 24, will include an awards ceremony to honor achievements in the optics field.

OFC, co-sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society and the Optical Society of America, includes a trade exposition and peer-reviewed educational programming, including technical and invited presentations, workshops, tutorials and short courses. Topic categories include: Fibers and Propagation; Amplifiers and Lasers: Fiber or Waveguide; Resonant Devices and Signal Conditioning; Optical Switching and Wavelength Routing Devices; Optoelectronic Devices; Digital Transmission Systems; Subsystems, Network Elements and Analog Systems; Networks; and Applications.

OFC will also feature The Service Provider Summit, for those involved in the service provider and carrier sectors. This full-day program includes panel discussions, a keynote presentation, business briefings, exhibits, an evening reception and networking events. Ralph Ballart, vice president of broadband infrastructure and services at SBC Laboratories, will be the keynote speaker, and there will be two panel discussions: A Competitive Focus: Service Provider Differentiation, moderated by David Piehler, of Harmonic Inc.'s Broadband Access Networks Division; and Meeting the Challenge: Fulfilling Customer Requirements, with Adam Joffe of SONY Online Entertainment and David M. Mihelcic of the Defense Systems Information Agency.

OFC will also include Market Watch: Business and Technology, a three-day series on the business trends and emerging technologies affecting the future of the communications industry, featuring guest speakers from government agencies, industry, research and the investment community.

More then 500 companies will exhibit the latest products and technologies, including devices, components, equipment, systems and network and carrier services. Exhibitor showcases will focus on new products and white-paper reports.
