Thermo Electron Corp., of Waltham, Mass., has opened a new manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China. The facility will add up to 300 new jobs when it is operating at capacity; it will initially produce 10 products, expanding to more than 20 products by 2006. Thermo will add metal detection and environmental instruments to products made at the site, which include absorption instruments, plate readers and sample preparation equipment. Thermo said the facility will enhance its global cost reduction and streamline manufacturing processes with its proximity to low-cost sources of components.
