Electro Scientific Industries Inc. (ESI), a Portland, Ore., producer of laser systems, and Cognex Corp., a machine-vision systems supplier based in Natick, Mass., have settled a patent lawsuit filed by Cognex against ESI in 2001. Cognex has granted ESI a nonexclusive license to the patent, No. 5,371,690, involving machine-vision technology, and certain covenants not to sue under other patents related to surface-mount equipment. . . . Palomar Technologies, a Vista, Calif., maker of precision microelectronic assembly products, represented the San Diego high-technology community as part of the San Diego World Trade Center mission to Shenzhen, China, and the Sixth Annual China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) last month. Palomar sponsored an exhibit in the San Diego pavilion at the CHTF, a trade show for imported technologies and products in China, held in conjunction with the grand opening of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Approximately 450,000 attended. Other San Diego exhibitors included Axesstel Wireless Inc., MagnaBioSciences (a division of Quantum Design), Pulse and Qualcomm Inc. The delegation also included California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and San Diego State University President Stephen Weber. The San Diego World Trade Center works to develop and expand international trade and commerce opportunities for the region. It is licensed by the World Trade Centers Association, based in New York.
