American Science and Engineering Inc., a Billerica, Mass., x-ray detection technology company, announced it has received an order for multiple linear accelerator systems totaling $5.3 million for its High-Energy Systems Division, a Mountain View, Calif.-based maker of low- to high-power electron beam and x-ray systems and their subcomponents. The accelerators will be manufactured for Accuray Inc., of Sunnyvale, for use in stereostatic radiosurgery. The order is the second received under a 2002 purchase agreement. . . . Charline Gauthier, OD, PhD, has been appointed executive vice president and COO of IntraLase Corp., an Irvine, Calif., maker of ultra-fast lasers, software and disposable devices used in creating the corneal flap, the first step in Lasik surgery. Gauthier was formerly vice president of research, development and corporate affairs and was previously COO of Summit Autonomous Inc., a manufacturer of excimer lasers, prior to its acquisition by Alcon Inc. Shelley B. Thunen, IntraLase's CFO since May 2001, has been promoted to executive vice president and CFO. . . . Rex Geveden was named chief engineer at NASA, effective Nov. 1. He succeeds Theron Bradley Jr., who recently announced his retirement. Geveden was deputy director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., from July 2003. He managed projects including the Optical Transient Detector and Lightning Imaging Sensor Earth-orbiting satellites, which produced data for the world's first global map of lightning, and was chief engineer for the Waves in Space Plasmas project, which involved the measurement of the characteristic frequencies of plasma, the form of matter that comprises more than 99 percent of the visible universe. . . . Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. demonstrated it Aquilion CFX multislice computed tomography product line, designed for cardiovascular imaging, at the New Cardiovascular Horizons Conference last week in New Orleans.
