Lumenis Ltd., a maker of laser and light-based devices used for medical and aesthetic applications, announced that its Quantum SR intense pulsed light (IPL) system will be used in a multicenter Phase II clinical study to be carried out in the US by Dusa Pharmaceuticals Inc., with which Lumenis has signed a development agreement. The multicenter study will focus on rejuvenating photodamaged skin, a condition commonly resulting from exposure to sunlight, using IPL in conjunction with Levulan (aminolevulinic acid), which increases photosensitivity. . . . Photonics Industries, of Bohemia, N.Y., announced it has shipped its first high-repetition-rate (10kHz), single longitudinal mode, diffraction-limited transverse mode 85-watt Nd:YAG laser system. The system will be used as the pumping source for mid-infrared pumping "OPO for DIAL" (optical parametric oscillator for based differential absorption lidar) application. . . . Agilent Technologies Inc. and Lumileds Lighting have announced an agreement to collaborate on a new series of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The companies said the mid-power-range devices will target the automotive, mobile phone and lighting markets, and will complement the Lumileds' Luxeon LEDs and Agilent's lower-power devices. Lumileds will provide high-brightness LED chips and technology; Agilent will contribute design, development and system integration expertise, including its patented manufacturing techniques. The first products from the collaboration are expected to be available by the end of this year.
