Celestial AI Raises $175M to Commercialize Photonic Fabric

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 29, 2024 — Celestial AI, creator of the Photonic Fabric optical interconnect technology platform, has raised $175 million in a series C funding round. The funding round will enable Celestial AI to execute multiple large-scale customer collaborations focused on commercializing its Photonic Fabric technology platform.

Celestial AI’s Photonic Fabric is an optical connectivity solution that enables the disaggregation of compute and memory, which allows each component to be effectively leveraged and scaled. The technology delivers over 25× greater bandwidth and memory capacity while reducing latency and power consumption by up to 10× compared to existing optical interconnect alternatives and copper.

The technology is designed to enable disaggregated, exascale compute and memory clusters. It’s suited for applications such as artificial intelligence models that require high levels of memory capacity and bandwidth, in addition to cloud services and data centers.

The round was led by Thomas Tull’s U.S. Innovative Technology Fund (USIT). In addition to USIT, the round saw participation from new and existing investors including AMD Ventures, Samsung Catalyst, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, M-Ventures, and Tyche Partners.

Glossary
optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
bandwidth
The range of frequencies over which a particular instrument is designed to function within specified limits. See also fiber bandwidth.
latency
Latency is the time interval between the stimulation or input of a system and the response or output. It is a measure of the time delay experienced in a system, network, or process. Latency can occur in various contexts: Computer systems and networks: In computing, latency refers to the delay between initiating a request (such as sending data or a command) and receiving a response. It includes processing time, transmission time over a network, and sometimes queueing delays in routers or...
