Bruker Opens Lab in Japan

Bruker Corp., headquartered in Billerica, Mass., has opened its expanded multitechnology applications and demonstration laboratory, which is colocated with the company's R&D and manufacturing facility for X-ray analysis systems in Yokohama, Japan. The 3000 square-meter facility is the single largest combined Bruker applications laboratory in the world, showcasing life science, materials research and industrial systems including NMR, research MRI, EPR, MALDI-TOF/TOF, ESI-ITMS and ESI-Qq-TOF mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and crystallography, x-ray fluorescence (XRF), EDS accessories for SEM, FT-IR and thermal analysis systems. The company says that the laboratory will enable scientists from Japan and Asia to investigate a wide range of applications on the systems, and will provide them with training, demonstrations and advice from application scientists.

Glossary
crystallography
The analysis of the atomic structures within crystals by means of x-ray diffraction.
mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular composition and structure of compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). It involves ionizing chemical substances to generate ions, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio using electric and magnetic fields, and detecting and quantifying these ions to create a mass spectrum. Ionization: Samples are ionized using techniques such as electron impact ionization, electrospray ionization...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
x-ray diffraction
The bending of x-rays by the regular layers of molecules in a crystal acting like a very small diffraction grating. The diffraction pattern so obtained and recorded on film provides a means for analyzing the crystal structure.
