Bruker Daltonics Detectors Get Radiation Safety Exemption

Field analytical systems and life sciences tools developer Bruker Daltonics of Billerica, Mass. today BrukerDaltonicsRaid.jpgannounced that its Raid IMS (ion mobility spectrometry) chemical detectors have received an exemption from radiation safety requirements from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The license exemption means the instruments don't have to be registered, licensed or leak tested, and the operator doesn't have to keep records or meet special disposal requirements. The IMS chemical detectors use a low intensity radiation source in a closed system to ionize air samples for analysis. They can detect and identify up to 20 chemical agents and toxic industrial chemicals and can monitor facilities and public buildings on a continuous basis, the company said.

Glossary
detector
1. A device designed to convert the energy of incident radiation into another form for the determination of the presence of the radiation. The device may function by electrical, photographic or visual means. 2. A device that provides an electric output that is a useful measure of the radiation that is incident on the device.
ion
An atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons and, as a result, carries a negative or positive charge.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
spectrometry
The study and measurement of spectra and their components.
