PHOENIX, Jan. 4, 2008 -- Electronic components distributor Avnet Inc. of Phoenix announced this week that it has acquired YEL Electronics Hong Kong Ltd., a distributor of semiconductor components in the Asia region. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

YEL generated revenue of approximately $200 million in FY2007 with over 80 percent coming from IP&E (interconnect, passive and electromechanical) products, Avnet said, and has more than 2000 customers in eight countries. The company will now be called Avnet YEL and will operate as a separate Avnet division.

Avnet made the acquisition through Avnet Electronics Marketing, one of its two operating groups. Avnet Electronics Marketing distributes components to electronic OEMs, manufacturing services providers and component manufacturers throughout North America, Brazil, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

"With this acquisition, we have increased our IP&E business in Asia by over 50 percent and become the largest IP&E distributor in the region," said Harley Feldberg, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing. "The IP&E distribution industry in Asia is highly fragmented, and Avnet intends to actively participate in its consolidation."

Avnet said the transaction is expected to be immediately accretive to earnings, excluding minimal integration charges.

Glossary
component
1. A constituent part. It may consist of two or more parts cemented together, or with near and approximately matching surfaces. 2. The projection of a vector on a certain coordinate axis or along a particular direction. 3. In a lens system, one or more elements treated as a unit. 4. An optical element within a system.
electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
