PARIS, Oct. 9 -- Alcatel Optics said that it expected a "weak" 2002 in the market for undersea optical networks but would act to maintain profitability for the division. Last week the company reported cuts of 3,038 positions in its worldwide fiber optics and undersea network activities, adding to previously announced lay-offs of 14,000 permanent staff.
